McLeish is a family run, award winning deli and convenience store based in the rural village of Inverurie. They opened their doors in May 2009 with the plan to be a one stop shop for all their customers’ needs with a strong emphasis on locally sourced products. The store carries a wide range of products, many of which are sourced locally - from local bakers to local butchers. McLeish have worked with the Scottish Grocer's Federation, ACS, him! and Eat Better Feel Better and now Bolt. These partnerships allow McLeish to keep growing and improving, and provide the service and options to satisfy their customers.



The Challenge

Many things have changed over the last 7 years, both in terms of customer shopping habits and within the local area, but the aim remains the same, to offer great service whilst keeping on top of the ever-changing consumer habits and maintaining a quality driven store.

To provide this, McLeish needed a way to combine on-the-job training with personal training, done in the employees own time, with a view to manage their progress. Ultimately, it would look to focus on the food safety aspect of training and the 18+ age group working within the alcohol and tobacco sector (who require training annually to keep up with legislation changes).  This also needed to cover areas like customer service skills, health and safety and chilled foods - to name a few.



Bolt’s Solution

We created 5 short compliance based modules that would help their staff engage in training whilst combining shop floor training (which is key for every staff member). The training would help compliment what they learnt on the job and would be completed in their own personal time, allowing them to reassess what they had learnt and access the training anytime, anywhere through our mobile-responsive LMS.

We wanted to provide a highly interactive and engaging training programme to increase staff motivation, whilst keeping it fun at the same time, with quizzes and games.


Bolt training has allowed me to communicate vital staff training remotely for the first time. It has given me the tools to ensure staff fully understand the topics being delivered and a robust reporting system that shows me how our staff are performing with the various tasks. Due to the nature of the system, it also helps build our staff training files and our due diligence procedures. I have been surprised how willing our staff are to complete the training in their own time and the positive feedback they have given.
As well as full training across key areas, the system also gives me an additional method to communicate remotely with our staff. Whist it is imperative that we all speak with our staff on a one-to-one and team basis, Bolt training has given me an additional way of communicating and checking understanding.
The team at Bolt are always on hand to help with any queries and encourage feedback to further develop the training packages. Bolt training has really opened my eyes in terms of how we look to develop our team going forward.
